Undertrial cases in Himachal to be disposed off by December 2010 – Chief Justice Joseph

Shimla: Cases of all undertrials languishing in different jails of state would be disposed off by December, 2010, Kurian Joseph, Chief Justice of Himachal High Court stated here today.
Addressing judicial officers and lawyers of Mandi after a video conferencing system linking up with Shimla was inaugurated; Justice Joseph said that the system of video conferencing and E-Court would bring qualitative improvement in delivering justice.
Presently there are more than 50,000 cases pending in the High Court and efforts were afoot to reduce the pendency level drastically, he said.
The chief justice said that legal aid clinics would be set up in all the Jails for providing free legal assistance to the under trials and their families.
At least lawyers will visit each jail once in a week to provide legal assistance to the under trials for the speedy disposal off their cases and to mitigate their woes on account of their stay in the jails without any trial, he said.
He commended the information technology department for linking Shimla, Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu with a video conferencing facility in the first phase.
Speaking on the occasion Justice Sanjay Karol in his address said that the E-Court system and video conferencing was a leap forward towards making the judiciary, people friendly.
He said that all the information about the court cases will shortly be computerized and anyone will be free to know the status of his of her case by a click of the button.
Jai Ram Thakur, rural development minister who was present on the occasion said that the new system should bring about transparency and efficiency in the functioning of judiciary.
