Mercury rises uncomfortably in Himachal hills

Shimla: Rising temperatures in the hills has marked an early prelude to the summer ahead as prevailing dry weather continues to deprive the region of spring rains that help to recharge water sources and sustain agriculture.

Meteorological director Manmohan Singh pointed out to the unusual rise in temperature recorded at Kapla on Saturday. He disclosed that the district headquarter of high altitude district of Kinnaur, Kalpa recorded a low of 7.3 and high of 24.4 degree Celsius on Saturday. The departure for high temperatures in March for the station was 12 degrees Celsius from normal.

Partly cloudy conditions in Shimla marginally dropped the day high from 25.7 on Saturday to 25.4 Celsius, which is 11 degrees above normal, said the met director.

In Shimla, woollens were coming off as tourists and residents switched into summer dresses.

At low lying Una, the high temperature which was 34.4 on Saturday touched 35.7 degree Celsius today, making it the hottest place in the state.

Elsewhere in Kullu at Bhuntar the day’s high was 30.5, at Dharamshala it was 29.8 and in Solan it was 31.4 degree Celsius.

Though it was cool at Keylong, the district headquarter of Lahaul Spiti on Saturday, which recorded a high of 11.4 degree and a low of (minus) – 0.6 degree Celsius but the high was 4 degrees and the low 1 degree above normal for the station in March.
