Manali to get a facelift -Himachal CM

Chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal today launched a Rs 3.51 crore Manali beautification project aimed at developing the 300 meter main street from Ibex Chowk to Nehru Chowk by constructing two-tier elevated planter, with place for sculptures along the centre line.

After inaugurating a 5 day Manali Winter Carnival festival, the chief minister said that domes for surveillance would be installed at ends, water fountains, wooden benches, RCC seating places, cast-iron benches, pavements with flowering granite hands, bollards with brass coated chairs would be added to beautify the place.

Recalling the association and attachment former prime ministers Jawahar Lal Nehru and Atal Bihari Vajpayee had for Manali, he said that beautification and development would be ensured in a systematic manner considering the scenic beauty of the place which is recognized the world over.

Touching upon the issue of containing female feticide, the chief minister said the state would be handing out special development grants of Rs 5 lakh to panchayats that recorded highest female births in a year. “Rearing a girl child was joint responsibility of each and every awakened citizen and it was necessary for retaining the sex ratio in the state,” said Dhumal.

As the chief minister on Tuesday heads to Costa Rica to attend a meet on carbon credits and environment conservation, the chief minister stressed upon protecting the environment for increasing carbon emissions were adding to global warming.

Seeking peoples participation in maintaining cleanliness, he said that for Manali to be counted amongst the best tourist destination in the world it was of import that its environs be kept beautiful.


On the occasion the chief minister also inaugurated the Winter Games being held at Manali and also launched the 2nd Phase of the Pulse Polio program in the state.
