Khimi Ram to continue as Himachal BJP President

Shimla: A party insider move to replace incumbent BJP state president Khimi Ram fell through as national president Nitin Gadkari on recommendation of chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal cleared his name late on Monday.

Close to the mid-night hour, national party president Nitin Gadkari cleared the name of sitting state president Khimmi Ram for a full fledged three year term after holding a four hour discussion with partymen, said a BJP legislator on conditions of anonymity.

Forest minister JP Nadda, whose name was doing the rounds, told reporters here that he was a disciplined partymen.

“There is no question of having withdrawn my name as I had not put it forth in the first place. I would continue to shoulder whatever responsibilities the party entrusts him with,” said Nadda.

Khimi Ram, a second-time legislator from Banjar in Kullu district, had resigned a deputy speaker from the Vidhan Sabha to become state president of BJP in July last year after Jairam Thakur, the then president was inducted into the state cabinet.

BJP’s spokesman Ashok Kapatia disclosed that the party’s formal election for state president to be held by consensus would be held on Wednesday Feb 3. Former chief minister of Uttarakhand Bhagat Singh Koshiari would be the party’s central observer for the election, he said.
