Himachal to present low cost intra-dermal anti-rabies vaccination technique at SEAWPI Conference

Shimla: Dr. Omesh Bharti, OSD, Directorate of Health Safety and Regulation at Shimla, will present a research paper on “low cost rabies prophylaxis’’ at South East Asia Western Pacific International Conference – November 2 to 6 to be held in Seol, Korea.
The paper focuses on the low cost intra-dermal anti-rabies vaccination technique being practiced in HP hospitals for dog and monkey bites. With the introduction of this technique, not only more number of patients were able to afford treatment of dog/monkey bites (common in HP), but the health department was able to save expenditure on vaccine by the government and patients to the tune of around Rs 45 lakhs in just one year.
His other two papers selected for postor presentation at the same conference are- one, on death due to rabies just because of a scratch by a rabid dog, and, the second on Evaluation of RNTCP (Revised National Tuber Culosis Control Programme.
In another achievement, he would also present a research paper at Regional Congress of International Society for Blood Transfusion (ISBT) at Nagoya in Japan from November 13 to 17 on reasons of drop out of voluntary blood donors. The study finds that 73 per cent of voluntary blood donors do not turn out for donating blood again for inadequate knowledge, lack of continuous motivation, along with the system’s failure to provide blood to them, when the voluntary donors are in need.
Dr Bharti has done this research study on voluntary donors in Himachal Pradesh during his Master of Applied Epidemiology from Chennai, which he completed recently, under the guidance of Dr Vidya Ramachandran, the deputy director of National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai.
Dr Bharti has thanked the Health department for all the help and guidance in carrying out the research work.
