Shimla: Giving the go ahead for setting up 8 new IIT in the country during the 11th Plan, the Ministry of Human Resources has asked the existing IITs to mentor the new ones for the initial 2-3 years or till they are permanently set up.
The 8 new IITs are to be located in the states of Bihar, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Orissa.
While IIT Roorkee has been assigned the task of assisting in setting up the IIT in Himachal, IIT Delhi has been asked to do so for the IIT Punjab, reliable sources close to the development disclosed. The Rajasthan IIT would be set up with the assistance of IIT Kanpur.
It may be mentioned that Union Finance Minister PC Chidambaram, on behalf of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 2nd October, 2007 had announced setting up of an IIT in the hill state.
Then chief minister Virbhadra Singh had proposed to locate the premier institute in Mandi district.
The state government was still scouting for about 500 acres of land to set up the IIT in Mandi district.
One of the prerequisites for setting up such an institute was good rail and air connectivity.
With IIT Rookree now being made the mentor institute under which the new IIT in the state is to come up, the mentor institute could play a vital role in site selection of the proposed IIT.

Thats a great news to all the himachalis
Visiting Himachal after a long period and looking at the conditions here in education and other sectors, IIT would not only bring a new competitiveness to our new generation but would also bring the much required attention to the state of Himachal. And of course jobs to locals and then the graduates coming out of IIT would hopefully bring better options to the state. Indeed this great news is part of the efforts required by state machinery. Right infrastructure and positive mentality by state leadership is highly required.
IIT in Himachal……indeed a good step….but quite challenging one as well.
In some years…HP would have some of the best brains working and supporting the institute….the challenge is to get the “intelligentsia” to work for the development of the society.
I am not sure who would take the initiative on this but the contribution of education to society at large, is still a remote possibility…..going by the history…but then History can always be changed.
It is slightly diappointing that haven’t heard much from the Department of education in the state…..or from the department of Industry on this topic…..why is not much Gung Ho — on this initiative — from their side so far……..the reasons could be very many…..but the first change that would bring IIT Himachal to the state is— positivity of the environment…..hope the State/ industry fraternity of the state factor this in their growth/ development paths
IMHO IIT should be near airport .Companies executive who want to hire students pass out from such institutions will not go by road . Kangra is one of the choice for IIT . Govt should also think about setting up Software IT park which can consume very intelligent brains comes out of IIT and NIT hamirpur.
