Himachal Olympian Shooter’s Brother Accidentally Shoots Himself

Shimla: Though belonging to a family of sharp shooters but not taking enough precautions caught Major Shamsher Jung on the wrong side of the double barreled personal gun as it accidentally fired and seriously injured the army officer on Monday.

Brother of Olympian shooter Samresh Jung, Shamsher, an officer with JK Rifles, was on annual leave at his village in Haripurkhol in Poanta when the accident took place.

District police chief JP Singh said, “preliminary inquiry reveals that there was no malafide involved in the incident.”

“It is a case of negligence and the gun shot received by Shamsher Jung appears to have accidentally fired. However, the police are investigating the case,” he said. The gun is a licensed one, he added.

In a statement to the police Shamsher Jung narrated that on Monday afternoon he was practice shooting with his licensed 12 bore gun. While placing an empty bottle for a target, he left the loaded gun resting against a nearby tree. The gun slipped and fell, resulting in pressing of the trigger and firing off the cartridge, which hit him in the shoulder.

The injured officer was rushed to Nahan hospital by neighbours where he was provided first aid. From Nahan Jung has been shifted to command hospital, Chandimandir, where he is reported to be out of danger.

The Jungs are a family of reputed shooters and Samresh Jung has even won rifle shooting medals at Asian and Common Wealth Games.
