Shimla: Reliance Communications country’s first Universal Service Obligation (USO) without any fanfare was quietly launched from a rural site in Himachal Pradesh, today.
“The USO site of Reliance Communication (RCom) has been set up in Kuther village of Kangra district. The site will cater to a population of about 14,500 residents scattered across 15 villages,†said Rahul Chaudhary, the chief operating officer of Reliance Communication for Himachal circle.
Rupesh Singh, spokesman RCom said that the service has been mandated under the telecom policy where every operator has to set up USO for enhancing telephone connectivity in country’s rural areas. The tower site of a USO can be shared by other private and public telephony service providers who operate on CDMA or GSM technologies, he added.
RCom is fast expanding its GSM network and already has a size able presence in the CDMA network. In Himachal the telecom major has been operating Reliance Telecom for over a decade and the CDMA network Reliance Infocomm was introduced later.
