SJVNL profits soar to Rs 732.71 crore

Shimla: Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVNL), which operates the country’s largest hydropower generation plant at Jhakri, has already recorded a profit of Rs 732.71 crore in the current financial year which is more than 47 percent from last year.

Chairman cum managing director HK Sharma handed over an Rs 126.5 crore interim dividend cheque to union power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde at Delhi on Saturday. ‘In comparison to a profit of Rs 498.22 crore profit in 2006-07, the center-state joint sector undertaking has in the current financial year already made a profit of Rs 732.71 crore” Sharma disclosed. SJVNL is a cash surplus company and we are keen to undertake more projects,” he said.

Better silt control management of Nathpa Jhakri power plant has enabled Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVNL) to achieve record generation, this year which has fetched rich dividends to the center and the state government.The hydro power generation plant has already overshot its generation target for the year. So far it has generated 5050 million units (MU) of electricity which is about 212 MU than what was targeted for the year.

The six 250 MW units of Nathpa Jhakri power plant were commissioned in 2003, with the power being fed into the northern grid and caters to the needs of Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh, J&K, Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh. Himachal Pradesh has a 25 percent equity share in the project and also draws 12 percent free power as royalty from the plant.

High silt in the fast flowing river, in the past effected generation but raising the dam height and using hard anti-corrosive coatings on the turbines have enhanced the generation capacity of the plant.
