Shri Virbhadra Singh, Chief Minister today paid a surprise visit to the construction site of the historical and heritage Gaiety Theatre Complex to take stock of the progress of the restoration work being carried out. He went around the Complex and inspected the quality and progress of work.

Chief Minister said that Gaiety Theatre was one of the heritage buildings of the capital town which was being restored to its original structure by requisitioning the services of the professionals expert in restoration work. He said that crores of rupees were being spent over the restoration project and Gaiety had been taken up as first building in the capital to restore the same to its original structure. He said that the building was being constructed as the top class cultural centre equipped with best facilities and adequate sitting space for the audience in the heart of the town. He said that the building would be instrumental in promotion of cultural activities and would provide art lovers an opportunity to fulfill their urge for artistic exhibits. He said that it would also be beneficial for the performers who visit Shimla to perform for specific audience.

Shri Virbhadra Singh directed the authorities to speed up the restoration work and at the same time uphold the quality by using best material available so that the historical building was restored to its original structure. He said that the Municipal Corporation office of Shimla would be the second heritage building likely to be taken up for restoration in the capital town in the next phase. He said that efforts were afoot to carry out the restoration work of the heritage buildings all over the state and regain the faded glory of the important towns and buildings.

We are visiting Shimla for the first time from 8 – 11th of April. As avid theatre goers here in London we wondered if there was anything on at you famous Gaiety Theatre or is it still undergoing renovation? Many thanks.
